Day 1: Conductivity: Is it in you?

Objectives

Explain what conductivity is and show how it is used to measure electrolytes in sport drinks.

Lesson Overview

Students read, "The true story of Gatorade & why there are sports drinks" in order to learn about electrolytes, ions, and conductivity. In teams they discuss when and why it may be appropriate to drink sports drinks and then they complete a taste test between two sports drinks and discuss the differences.

  • Sports drinks of various brands
  • Drinking cups
Procedure

Students read, "The true story of Gatorade & why there are sports drinks" in order to fill out the attached worksheet.  In teams they discuss when and why it may be appropriate to drink sports drinks and share their answers with the rest of the class.  Lastly, they complete a blind taste test between different sports drinks, try to determine which one is which, and discuss the differences.
