City Students Use Live Data to Teach Ecology on the Walkway

Millbrook, NY— Students from the City of Poughkeepsie are serving as ecology docents on the Walkway Over the Hudson, using live data transmitted to a sign on the Walkway from the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System. Through the summer and into the fall students in grades 5-12 will be teaching the public about the ecology of the Hudson River watershed.

City of Poughkeepsie Students Act as Community Stewards through Storm Drain Project

Millbrook, NY—As part of an after school enrichment program, fifth grade students from G.W. Krieger Elementary School, working with Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies educators are becoming  environmental stewards. Fourteen students are involved in the effort, which was initiated by Cary Institute educators in partnership with Skip Hoover, a classroom teacher with a passion for science education. The group of students is called Hudson River Stewards Project.

Millbrook, NY—Cornelia Harris, Education Program Leader at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, has been named a recipient of the 2011 Barnabas McHenry Hudson River Valley Awards. Sponsored by the Open Space Institute, the McHenry Awards are given annually to four college or graduate students, who receive $5,000 grants to complete their projects with regional nonprofits. The projects focus on environmental conservation, historic preservation, the arts, or tourism and are selected for their contribution to strengthening the future health of the Hudson River Valley.

Fluctuations Before the Fall: Predicting and Preventing Environmental Collapse

Insecticides from Genetically Modified Corn Present in Adjacent Streams

Millbrook, N.Y.—In a paper published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies aquatic ecologist Dr. Emma J. Rosi-Marshall and colleagues report that streams throughout the Midwestern Corn Belt are receiving insecticidal proteins that originate from adjacent genetically modified crops. The protein enters streams through runoff and when corn leaves, stalks, and plant parts are washed into stream channels.

Ecologists to Discuss Impacts of Mountaintop Mining at Special ESA Symposium

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—On Tuesday, August 3rd, as part of the Ecological Society of America’s (ESA) 95th Annual Meeting, a team of scientists will discuss the environmental impacts of surface mining in the central Appalachians. Home to some of the most diverse habitats on the continent, Appalachian forests and streams are being permanently altered by mountaintop removal and valley fill mining. This coal extraction procedure involves felling trees, stripping soils, blasting mountains, and filling valleys with mining debris.

Despite playing critical ecological roles—from preventing floods and recharging aquifers to supporting threatened wildlife―vernal pools are often unprotected by state and federal regulations.

Millbrook, N.Y. -- Several nonprofit environmental or conservation organizations in the mid–Hudson Valley may have to eliminate staff or programs if the proposed state budget is passed.

The Black Rock Forest Consortium, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, and the Mohonk Preserve, all receive annual grants from the state’s Zoos, Botanical Gardens, and Aquaria (ZGBA) Program. These grants, which support educational programs, will be slashed by almost 50 percent under the proposed budget.
