Cary Institute to host outdoor performance by Arm of the Sea Theater

Our relationship with water explored through puppets, music, and poetry

On Sunday, July 28 at 4:00 p.m. join the Cary Institute for a special production by Arm of the Sea Theater. Discover how water from Catskill Mountaintops feeds Manhattan taps in the dynamic presentation, The City That Drinks the Mountain Sky.

Using vibrant masks, puppets, poetry, and music, performers will take guests on a journey to the heart of the Catskill watershed. Find out how forests act like kidneys, filtering water as it moves towards streams and reservoirs. And meet some of the engineers and laborers who built the reservoirs and aqueducts that provide Catskill mountain water to downstate residents.

The New York City water supply system is one of the engineering wonders of the world. From the Catskill Mountain watersheds, gravity helps to deliver more than a billion gallons of drinking water to the faucets of nine million people in New York City and surrounding communities in a journey that spans more than one hundred miles.

Social aspects will also be explored, including how this enormous water project brought profound changes to the Catskill Mountain communities and ways that water managers and upstate residents are currently working together to protect this vital freshwater treasure.

Weather permitting, the event will be held on the lawn of Cary East (Gifford House), located at 2917 Sharon Tpk. (Rte. 44) in Millbrook, NY.  The rain location will be in our auditorium located at 2801 Sharon Tpk. Space is limited.
