Findlay’s efforts have shed light on management, restoration

Millbrook, NY – Dr. Stuart E.G. Findlay, an aquatic ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, was recently honored with an Environmental Quality Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He was selected for the award based on his scientific achievements, which have helped lead to better stewardship practices in the Hudson River.

(L-R) Linda Cox, Executive Director of the Bronx River Alliance; Stuart Findlay, Senior Scientist at the Cary Institute; and Judith Enck, Regional Administrator of Region 2 of the U.S. EPA.

The award selection committee noted that his research has been, "an important part of developing science-based targets for restoration and for making permitting decisions." And that his work has, "greatly improved our understanding of the Hudson River and its implications for large rivers worldwide."

For more than twenty-five years, Findlay has been investigating the ecological functions of submerged aquatic vegetation, intertidal wetlands, and the shoreline zone of the river. He's also played a leadership role in the Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observation System (HRECOS), a collaborative network of real-time monitoring stations on the Hudson River Estuary.

Each April, in honor of Earth Day, the EPA bestows Environmental Quality Awards on a selection of individuals, organizations, agencies, industry, and media who have made significant contributions to environmental quality in Region 2 (NY, NJ, PR, and the US Virgin Islands).
