Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Celebrating 30 years

Related Issues

The Cary Institute is home to one of the longest running Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs in the nation. Since 1987, more than 300 students have spent a summer conducting independent research with a Cary mentor. Our REU program gives students – often for the first time in their academic careers – the opportunity to engage in extended, hands-on ecological research. This summer, 13 students from 12 colleges and universities explored a range of questions, among them: the use of satellite data to monitor lakes, natural mosquito control methods, environmental education strategies, and the effects of wastewater on the Hudson River Estuary. Most Cary REU alums go on to pursue careers in science. They include numerous university professors and research scientists, as well as veterinarians, medical doctors, science teachers, and museum educators. Applications for 2018 are being accepted through January 28.
