Writer in residence Akiko Busch

The Cary Institute has formed a Writer/Artist-in-Residence Fellowship Program, with the goal of building multidisciplinary bridges. Invited guests spend several weeks residing at the campus, exploring its natural ecosystems, and interacting with research staff. The loosely structured immersion in the Cary community is meant to inspire creative works that relay ecosystem concepts and the work of ecosystem scientists to the public.

This May, writer Akiko Busch was the Institute's inaugural writer-in-residence. Busch writes about culture, design, and nature for magazines, newspapers, and websites. She's also the author of four books, among them Nine Ways to Cross a River, a collection of essays documenting her swims across eight historic waterways, including the Hudson River. Currently she is researching a book, under contract with Yale University Press, on how citizens can contribute to science.
