"Road Salt: Moving toward the Solution" highlights the human and environmental health impacts of road salt use and methods that minimize salt inputs. Salt minimizing practices can save both the environment and town budgets.
Between 10 and 20 million tons of salt are used each year to keep roads snow-free. The accumulation of road salt in surface and groundwater is a regional problem, including in the Hudson Valley, compromising drinking water and degrading the quality of creeks and streams. It can take decades for road salt to flush out of a watershed, which means that concentrations may increase even if we curb road salt use today.
"Road Salt: Moving toward the Solution" was prepared in collaboration with scientists at Vassar College and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County and is the product of a Science and Management forum that the Cary Institute held on the topic.
