Hudson Data Jam Competition

Now entering its 10th year, the Hudson Data Jam Competition challenges students to creatively tell the science stories of the Hudson River watershed.

Making data "sing" through creative expression.

*Please Note: Datasets are currently being updated and have been temporarily removed. We will launch datasets by December 22, 2022. If you would like to begin working with your students before then, please email Ashley Alred at and we can work with you to share resources.

Hudson Data Jam 2023

We are offering...

  1. Traditional Data Jam for middle and high school students.
  2. A Junior Data Jam that allows elementary school students to compete.
  3. Recorded webinars that can support you and your students kick start your Data Jam journey.
  4. A Facebook group for all participants - students and instructors alike - to connect and share strategies for remote Data Jamming.

Why a Data Jam?

The Hudson River Valley has been intensely studied by scientists for decades. Yet despite the tremendous discoveries made about the Hudson, many of the river's science stories are not well known by the people who call the Hudson Valley home. We believe that the skills of understanding, interpreting, and presenting data are essential in a world where our ability to collect data outpaces our ability to make it understandable for a public audience.

Data Jammers will immerse themselves in authentic, local datasets collected by professional scientists, including Cary Institute ecologists. Whether students create a graphic, song, video, sculpture, computer game, puppet show, or children's book, their imagination is the limit!

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top projects at the elementary, middle,  and high school levels during our Awards Ceremony & Celebration on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.

Have fun Data Jamming, and if you have questions along the way you can always connect with us at or on our Hudson Data Jam Facebook page.
