Allan Shope is the principal and owner of Allan Shope Architect, a high-end residential firm specializing in elegant, sustainable design. He brings his love for nature and commitment to protecting the environment to his work as well as to his community. Shope not only serves as a longtime trustee for Cary Institute; he also acted as our unofficial in-house architectural advisor for the renovation of the Tozer Ecosystem Science Building in 2020–2022. In addition, Allan was a trustee of the Dutchess Land Conservancy and president of the board of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater.

Carrying on a storied tradition as the fourth generation of architects in his family, Shope began his career by earning a BArch from the Rhode Island School of Design. Soon after, he launched Shope Reno Wharton Associates as a founding partner, where he designed homes, schools, museums, and environmental education centers for 25 years. In 2006, he left the firm to start Allan Shope Architect, where his focus is inspired, sustainable, carbon-neutral architecture. He is a dedicated conservationist and falconer.
