The Cary Institute's weather station was installed in 1987 and expanded in 2004 with the addition of a NOAA Climate Reference Network (USCRN) station. In 2025, weather measurements made through Cary’s Environmental Monitoring Program that were redundant with the CRN were ended.
From 2025 forward, data from the Cary Institute station includes snow depth, barometric pressure, photosynthetically active radiation and wind speed and wind direction at 10 m.
The CRN station provides temperature and precipitation data as well as soil moisture and temperature, surface temperature, wetness, solar radiation and wind speed at 1.5 meters.
Archived data from the Cary Institute’s Environmental Monitoring Program are recorded in three-minute, hourly and daily increments. Three-minute data collection ended in 2025. Data from the USCRN are in 5 minute, hourly and daily increments.
