We are all living in a new normal (although there is nothing normal about these times). To adapt, Cary Institute has done a number of things to ensure the safety of our staff, colleagues, and friends, and to offer opportunities to entertain, educate, and engage you all. These include:
- Suspending in-person events, including our Thursday Science Seminars, Friday Night at Cary public lectures, Weekend Ecology Programs, and the Spring Luncheon.
- Working with staff to ensure they have the tools needed to continue their important work remotely, per the Governor’s 100% work from home rule.
- Opening our trails and grounds early, to provide the community with access to outdoor spaces.
- Sharing educational resources with parents and teachers that are homeschooling.
Our research community is creative, resilient, and steadfast in their commitment to advancing ecological science that makes the world a better place. During this uncertain time, Cary scientists will continue their work understanding and addressing society's most vexing environmental problems.
We count among our staff disease ecologists developing innovative tools for forecasting emerging viruses like COVID-19, urban ecologists providing the science needed to make cities resilient to climate change, and freshwater ecologists working to understand and mitigate pollution threats to rivers, lakes, and streams.
While you are social distancing, consider taking a look at our video archive. It contains a trove of past lectures covering a range of topics from using ecology to prevent Lyme disease to the recovery of monarch butterflies. We are working to offer virtual events. The health and safety of our staff, visitors, and community is paramount to Cary Institute. The social distancing required to stop the spread of COVID-19 has altered all of our lives, but we must do our part to flatten the curve. Together, we will get through this unprecedented situation.
